Basel match reaction
Aston Villa secured their fifth win out of six in the league, cementing our position as joint leaders at the end in the first phase of the competition. We travelled to Basel in absolutely outstanding form, riding the confidence of seven straight victories and looking to add yet another to what has been an incredible run under Unai Emery.
Despite that momentum, the performance over the 90 minutes was far from our best. We struggled to find rhythm, the tempo was flat at times, and Basel made life difficult by slowing the game down and disrupting our patterns of play. It had all the hallmarks of one of those frustrating European nights where nothing quite clicks.
But the sign of a top side is the ability to win even when you’re not at your sharpest and once again, Villa proved exactly that.
The introduction of Youri Tielemans at half-time completely changed the flow of the match. His composure, intelligence, and forward ambition gave Villa a spark that had been missing. Tielemans’ impact was immediate and decisive, helping shift control back in our favour and ultimately making the difference on a night where moments, not overall play, decided the outcome.
This team continues to defy expectations. The mentality is strong, the belief is growing, and the ability to grind out results home or away is becoming a defining trait of this Villa side. Even in an underwhelming performance, the lads found a way. And that’s what keeps this incredible run alive.
